Limitations: Doesn't distinguish fat from muscle mass.

More informative than BMI for:
- Athletes with high muscle mass
- Sarcopenic obesity assessment
- Metabolic health prediction
Calculating Energy Needs
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Energy expended at complete rest. Common equations:
Mifflin-St Jeor (Recommended):
- Men: 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) - 5×age + 5
- Women: 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) - 5×age - 161
Harris-Benedict (Historical):
- Less accurate but still widely used
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)
TDEE = BMR × Activity Factor

Special Situations
Diabetes: Lower carb, higher protein Renal disease: Protein restriction based on stage Critical illness: Higher protein (1.2-2.0 g/kg/day)
