When to use this calculator

Estimate resting expenditure as one input to an adult nutrition assessment. Record the equation alongside the value so a later estimate can be compared on the same basis. A measured value from indirect calorimetry answers a different question.

Worked example

For 80 kg, 180 cm and 40 years, the male-coefficient estimate is 800 + 1125 - 200 + 5 = 1730 kcal/day. The female coefficient gives 1564. Neither number includes an independently assessed whole-day activity allowance.

Limitations and safety notes

The development sample comprised adults aged 19-78. Predictions at age or body-composition extremes, in pregnancy or acute illness need particular caution. The binary coefficients reflect the historical study and are not a complete assessment of hormone exposure or individual physiology.

Frequently asked questions

Is a calculated value a measured metabolic rate?

No. A repeat measurement of height and weight can improve input quality but cannot remove the prediction error of the equation.
