Daily modeled expenditure equals the 1984 revised Harris-Benedict estimate multiplied by the entered PAL. The factor represents total daily expenditure relative to basal expenditure, not just scheduled exercise.

When to use this calculator

Build an auditable maintenance-energy estimate when the source of the activity factor is known. Record both the basal model and PAL. Do not silently attach a factor to an exercise-frequency label.

Worked example

A basal estimate of 1796.862 kcal/day and PAL 1.5 give 2695.293 kcal/day. Changing only PAL to 1.7 gives 3054.6654. The 359.3724-kcal difference reflects the assumption, not a new physiological measurement.

Limitations and safety notes

An activity factor cannot represent refeeding risk, pregnancy, growth, major illness or a changing metabolic state. PAL uncertainty and basal-equation error both propagate into the estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Does exercising three days a week determine PAL?

No. Occupational, household and leisure activity across the whole day also matter. The tool therefore asks for a separately selected factor.
