How this calculator works

The primary result is non-HDL cholesterol = total minus HDL. The details also report total/HDL ratio and, only when applicable, Friedewald LDL and a VLDL proxy. Cholesterol uses 0.0259 mmol/L per mg/dL; triglycerides use 0.0113. Each quantity keeps its own conversion.

When to use this calculator

To reconcile relationships within a lipid profile and understand which outputs depend on assumptions. Non-HDL and the total/HDL ratio do not require the triglyceride-to-VLDL approximation.

Clinical interpretation

Non-HDL represents cholesterol outside the HDL fraction, not a particle count or an individual event probability. A result is not itself a treatment target. Suppression of Friedewald outputs never substitutes a fabricated zero LDL.

Worked example

For total cholesterol 200, HDL 50 and triglycerides 150 mg/dL: non-HDL = 150 mg/dL (3.885 mmol/L), total/HDL = 4, VLDL proxy = 30 mg/dL and Friedewald LDL = 120 mg/dL. At triglycerides 400, non-HDL remains 150 and the ratio remains 4, while LDL/VLDL estimates are withheld.

Limitations and safety notes

HDL must be positive and cannot exceed total cholesterol. The optional estimates require confirmed specimen assumptions, triglycerides below 400 mg/dL and nonnegative calculated LDL. Fasting and absence of known chylomicronemia/type III dyslipoproteinemia are deliberately conservative restrictions. Modern laboratory estimation may use other equations; this tool does not duplicate them.

Frequently asked questions

Are all profile calculations lost with high triglycerides?

No. Non-HDL and total/HDL remain available from valid total and HDL measurements; the Friedewald-dependent outputs are suppressed.

Why do results change immediately after editing?

All displayed relationships derive from the current inputs, so an old calculated result cannot remain attached to a changed sample.
