Check a prescribed gravity infusion with a verified giving-set factor. Use the actual final infusion volume, not just the diluent volume. Some medicines or clinical circumstances require a controlled pump and cannot be made suitable for gravity delivery by correct arithmetic.

Worked example

Fictional order: 500 mL over 240 minutes with a 20-drop/mL set gives 41.6667 drops/minute. Nearest whole-drop delivery is 42 drops/minute, or 126 mL/hour, compared with the prescribed 125 mL/hour: a 0.8% increase. An entered 125-mL/hour maximum would therefore flag the rounded rate.
