How this calculator works
Volume rate in mL/hour = prescribed final volume in mL x 60 / prescribed duration in minutes. Decimal volumes and durations are retained through the calculation. A separately verified maximum rate is compared without modifying the prescription or silently rounding to a pump setting.

Check the rate for an existing intermittent or continuous volume-and-duration order. Confirm that the entered volume includes additives when they contribute to final volume. This is a delivery calculation, not a decision about whether the patient needs fluid.

Worked example
A fictional 75-mL final infusion over 90 minutes requires 50 mL/hour. The same volume over 45 minutes requires 100 mL/hour. If the entered maximum is 80 mL/hour, the second order is flagged for reconciliation rather than being silently changed to 80.
