How this calculator works
The historical proxy assumes VLDL cholesterol is triglycerides/5 when both are expressed in mg/dL. Triglycerides entered in mmol/L are divided by 0.0113 first; the resulting cholesterol estimate is multiplied by 0.0259 to return mmol/L.
When to use this calculator
To inspect the assumed VLDL term behind Friedewald LDL calculations. It is a deliberately limited teaching estimate, not a general-purpose measurement of VLDL or remnant particles.

Clinical interpretation
A calculated VLDL cholesterol proxy is not VLDL particle number, total triglyceride concentration or a cardiovascular event probability. No normal/elevated band or medication advice is generated.
Worked example
Triglycerides 150 mg/dL equal 1.695 mmol/L. The proxy is 150/5 = 30 mg/dL cholesterol, or 0.777 mmol/L. At 400 mg/dL triglycerides the estimate is withheld rather than reported as 80 mg/dL.
Limitations and safety notes
The fixed ratio fails when lipid composition differs from its assumptions. This interface requires a fasting sample without known chylomicronemia or type III dyslipoproteinemia and triglycerides below 400 mg/dL. Even within these restrictions, the value is an approximation. Zero triglycerides produce a mathematical zero, not reassurance about the rest of a lipid profile.
Frequently asked questions
Is triglyceride mmol/L divided by five correct?
No. Five is the mass-concentration ratio. Triglyceride and cholesterol conversions to mmol/L differ.
Is the result a measured VLDL concentration?
No. It is the cholesterol fraction inferred from a fixed ratio, with no claim to particle measurement.
