Weight Loss Calculator

Weight Loss Calculator for Endocrinology. Positive values indicate reduction, zero indicates no change and negative values indicate an increase. The number alone does not distinguish fluid shifts, muscle loss or changes in adipose tissue.

For shared guidance on choosing a tool and documenting results, read the clinical calculator workflow.

How this calculator works

Percentage reduction = 100 x (starting weight - comparison weight) / starting weight. The absolute difference is also reported. This is transparent arithmetic, not the NIH dynamic Body Weight Planner.

When to use this calculator

Document a weight change or quantify an already agreed goal. Confirm the starting date and measurement conditions; an unintentional fall in weight is a clinical finding, not automatically a desirable outcome.

Inputs used

  • Starting weight
  • Comparison or independently agreed target weight in matching units

Clinical interpretation

Positive values indicate reduction, zero indicates no change and negative values indicate an increase. The number alone does not distinguish fluid shifts, muscle loss or changes in adipose tissue.

Worked example

A change from 100 to 95 kg is a 5-kg reduction and 5%. A change from 50 to 45 kg is also 5 kg but 10%. This distinction corrects the former error of assigning percentage labels from kilogram differences.

Limitations and safety notes

The calculation does not select a safe target, daily deficit or time to reach it. It does not model adaptive energy expenditure, pregnancy, growth or illness-related weight change.

Frequently asked questions

Does a five-percent change have the same meaning for everyone?

No. Intent, baseline nutrition, time interval, fluid status and clinical context determine its significance.
