How this calculator works

Glycemic load equals GI x available carbohydrate grams / 100. It combines the relative GI with portion carbohydrate. The tool returns an unrounded numeric calculation without forcing fractional results into gapped integer categories.

When to use this calculator

Compare portion scenarios using a published GI for the relevant food and preparation. Check that the GI reference scale and the carbohydrate definition are compatible before multiplying.

Worked example

A food with GI 50 and 30 g available carbohydrate has GL 15. Halving the portion carbohydrate to 15 g gives GL 7.5 while GI remains 50. This is a portion calculation, not a predicted blood glucose concentration.

Limitations and safety notes

Food preparation and GI variability matter. Available carbohydrate is not automatically identical to every label entry called total carbohydrate. Do not turn GL into an insulin dose or a diagnosis of impaired glucose tolerance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate GI from the macronutrient label alone?

No. GI is a measured food-response value, not a quantity this multiplication derives from fat, protein and carbohydrate grams.
