Worked example

A change from grade 1 to grade 2 is worsening by one category, not a 100% loss of function. Two patients in grade 2 may still differ in treatment tolerance and support needs.

Grade 5 records death and is not grouped with ordinary functional limitation. A grade alone does not determine treatment or trial eligibility. The developer notes that different mappings to Karnofsky exist; this page does not force one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter an observer average of 1.5?

No. Resolve the assigned category clinically; an average is not an individual ECOG grade.
